  • Group 24

    10.25 × 6.81 × 8.88 in

  • Group 34

    10.25 × 6.81 × 7.88 in

Many older Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models

  • Group 25

    9.06 × 6.94 × 8.88 in

  • Group 35

    9.06 × 6.94 × 8.88 in

Many Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Subaru models

  • Group 47H5 / LN2

    9.56 × 6.94 × 7.5 in

  • Group 86

    9.06 × 6.81 × 8 in

  • Group 121R

    8.25 × 7 × 8.5 in

Fitting the tray isn’t enough: match the terminal layout and the CCA your owner’s manual asks for.

How to read a battery group size

  • The number is the case size. Group 24 is 10 1/4 inches long; group 35 is 9 1/16.
  • R means reverse terminals: positive and negative swapped compared with the base group.
  • F (as in 24F) is a variant with the terminals on the other side; treat it as its own size.
  • H5, H6, H7, H8 and LN2–LN5 are European names used by many newer cars: H6 is group 48.

Choosing a replacement battery

  1. Match the group size, including any R or F, from the old battery’s label or the owner’s manual.
  2. Match or beat the cold cranking amps (CCA), especially where winters are cold.
  3. Cars with start-stop need an AGM or EFB battery if that’s what came from the factory.
  4. Check the date code: a battery that has sat on the shelf for more than six months may need charging first.

Buying a used car? The VIN decoder confirms the exact year, engine and trim, which is what parts lookups need.

Questions

What is a battery group size?

A standard set by Battery Council International (BCI) for a battery’s case dimensions, terminal positions and terminal type. Any group 35 battery fits where a group 35 came out, whatever the brand.

How do I find my car’s battery group size?

It’s printed on the label of the battery that’s in the car now, usually as “Group 35” or just the number. It’s also in the owner’s manual, and parts stores can look it up by year, make and model.

What does the R in 51R or 94R mean?

Reverse terminals: the positive and negative posts are swapped compared with the base group. A 51 and a 51R are the same size, but the cables may not reach the wrong layout, so match the letter.

Are H6 and group 48 the same?

Yes. H6 and L3 are the European (DIN/EN) names for group 48. Likewise H5 is group 47, H7 is group 94R and H8 is group 49.

Can I use a different group size?

Only if it fits the tray and hold-down, the terminals are on the same sides, and it meets the cold cranking amps (CCA) your manual asks for.
